Why The Virginia Right to Vote Amendment Is Needed
By voting Yes on Question 3, we can ensure that every eligible voter has their voice protected in our state’s highest law.
Our voting rights are under attack.
The Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, and the U.S. House of Representatives passed the SAVE Act, which would jeopardize voting rights for the 8 in 10 women in opposite sex marriages who changed their names when they got married. This amendment ensures our rights are protected for the future in Virginia from politicians who could take them away with the stroke of a pen.
This amendment would also end the Jim Crow–era provisions still in Virginia’s Constitution designed to keep Black voters and other communities of color from the polls by permanently stripping voting rights from people with felony convictions. This amendment is a historic chance to end that Jim Crow relic by restoring people’s rights once they have completed their sentences and returned to their communities.

What the Virginia Right to Vote Amendment Does
Create an explicit constitutional right to vote.
Create an explicit constitutional right to vote for every eligible Virginian, something Virginia’s Constitution does not currently guarantee.
Protect against attacks on voting rights.
Protect against current and future attacks on voting rights by taking the right to vote out of politicians’ hands.
Ensure a fair voting process.
Ensure a fair process that doesn’t rely on the whims of politicians by automatically restoring voting rights to Virginians with felony convictions once they have completed their sentences and returned to their communities.
Protect voting rights of people with disabilities.
Protect people with disabilities from automatically losing their right to vote when put under a guardianship by empowering judges to decide case-by-case if that person understands the act of voting.
